Confessions of a Lane Six Swimmer, Part 6

Hands Up
A rare breakthrough happened last Thursday: I finally understood how to keep my elbows high and enter with my fingers, not wrists. This breakthrough came during a drill that Coach Jen called "Stab the Water". It sounded simple but it took me two frustrating months to figure out. Now I visualized my hands as spears stabbing the water at an angle at each stroke. I tried this new technique in Rehoboth Beach this weekend, and my efficiency vastly improved.

Gays v. Marines

Gays v. Marines
All across America, Marines set up recruiting stations were teenagers are likely to visit. These stations often involve a pull up bar and incentives such as key chains or t-shirts for guys who can do a few pull-ups, or hold up a few minutes for females.
Well, yesterday the Martine boys were out to recruit at Kelly Drive near the start of the Frontrunners Philadelphia, a gay and lesbian running group. I don't know whether it was the irony that the Marines weren't recruiting gays or gays couldn't resist getting free Marines t-shirts, Frontrunners members started to line up for the pull-up challenge.
One by one, each of us did at least 10 pull-ups to win a t-shirt. One by one, we refused to add our names to their contact list by saying "Sorry, boys. I'm gay!"

Marine Corps Marathon: 10 Weeks Away

Marine Corps Marathon: 10 Weeks Away
I didn't run at all during the week, so I really needed a solid long run to get myself into marathon shape. I started around 8 am, carrying a Nathan bet with two bottles of Gatogade and two Powerbar gel packs.
I was slow and sluggish the first two miles, and then there was divine intervention as I merged onto Martin Luther King Drive: Student Run Philly Style! This is a great three-year old program to enable Philadelphia inner city students to train and run the Philadelphia Marathon While in my head, I was cheering and rooting for these kids and their volunteer coaches, I also determined to pass them. I sped ahead to Falls Bridge. Didn't find any more distractions, so I looped back a mile, crossing paths with SRPS, and turned around. I started passing SRPS again when I crossed over to Kelly Drive. I did another sub-loop between St. Joe's boathouse and the viewing stand before heading toward Lloyd Hall.
The time was around 9:45 am, so I started seeing Frontrunners heading out. I was ahead of my conservative pace. Thus, instead of stopping at the boathouse row for a 13.1 mile run, I decided to continue. I went up the Rocky steps at the Art Museum, and then looped back behind the Art Museum long enough to give myself a 15-mile run.

China cracks down on AIDS groups ahead of Olympics

Dear NBC,

I've enjoyed watching your Olympics coverage ever since I was a kid. I was excited when China was announced as the host of the 2008 Olympics. However, recent news events such as the one above are forcing me to reconsider whether I wanted to be a part of the event. To me, the Olympics is a celebration of the human spirits, which certainly include human rights.

You read my blog, you provide outgoing link to my blog from yours, and you're straight! Why I appreciate your readership, I often wonder what brings you to a blog entitled "Gay Sex and Advanced Calculus". That's why I'm posting this photo of gay guys in impossibly short bathingsuits as a test. If this photo is going to make you reaching for the panic button and promptly remove the outgoing link, I'll be sad but I'll understand!

Best regards

Half-Wit Half

"For only a fool would do the Halfwit; a 13.1M rustic trail of rocks galore, downed logs, bizarre aide stations, gnats & newts, crazy awards, memorable shirts, urban horrors like the "128 Steps from Hell" and silliness that would make a jester jocular!"
I needed a break from Petty Gay Drama, so a road trip for a trail run was the answer. I drove to Reading, PA this morning for the Half-Wit Half Marathon. It was challenging, but not as bad as the teasing promotion quoted above. I kept a pace of 8 to 9 minute mile when the trail was somewhat flat. When hills came, I walked and moaned! About 10 men passed me during the "128 Steps from Hell" when I moaned the loudest. Once the steps were over, I passed all these men smiling! My last 3 or 4 miles were awesome as I was able to keep up with a strong 20-something girl. We passed everyone in sight, and no one passed us. After the last water stop, with 0.6 mile left I stepped ahead of her and never looked back!
My time was around 2:20. I finished at 183 overall out of about 600 runners. While the time was about 30 minutes higher than what I could do in a half marathon road race, this Half-Wit Half was my second best race this year.

Calling All Toe Nail Fairies

As memories of my recent Rehoboth soccer tournament start to fade away, there is a reminder that will stay with me for at least the rest of this year: my nail-less toe! An opposing player stepped on my toe during an on-field collision. I came back from the tournament with a black toe.

I forgot about it until one day as I put on my socks, I felt like there was something in the way. I pulled the sock out and saw that my black toe nail was up 45 degrees. The fresh underneath the toe nail was mostly pink and red. Not a pretty sight!

The loose nail became looser each day. During my swim pratice on Tuesday this week, I could feel that the nail was flapping against the toe as I kicked water. I couldn't do the breast stroke kick since the nail created extra drag as my breast strok kick opened. It really freaked me out.

Not only this nail is interfering with my swims, it's interfering with my runs as well. I haven't been able to go back to my best long-run pace, and I partially blamed the loose nail. I needed to do something before my half-marathon race this weekend. I considered Super Glue, but I didn't think it could keep the nail intact for the length of the race.

I decided to take the matter into my own hands, as I usually do. I lifted up, shook it left and right. It came right off.

Vagina Monologue

This is the kind of email I get when I sign up for running races by Pretzel City Sports.

A guy and a girl were done having sex when they decided they were hungry and thirsty too. It was really freezing in the house so they began to argue about who should go get the food and drink.

After a while they decide to have a contest; whoever can come up with
the best poem would be the one to stay in bed.

The guy thought for a second and then said. "OK, here goes!"

"Two times two is four
Add five and it is nine,
I can pee in yours
but you can't pee in mine".

The girl thought for a second and then responded

"Two times two is four
Add five and it is nine,
I know the length of yours but
you'll never know the depth of mine."
